This GF French Toast Recipe is Simple Yet Sophisticated
Updated: May 23
You can know a lot about a person by the way they make French toast. I haven’t attempted to count how many recipes I have for French toast, but this recipe is the one I just keep coming back to. Maybe it’s because I know Tiger is crazy about it.
It’s not difficult to make, but for outstanding results, you have to abide by a few basic principles.
1. The bread should be somewhat substantial. It should not just disintegrate when it comes in contact with batter.
2. Don’t oversoak the bread. I usually count to 30 seconds per side for softer sandwich bread; and I count up to 60 seconds for firmer, crustier breads.
3. Use medium heat. Lower heat means more time that the dipped slice can be in contact with the heat surface before it turns golden brown.
4. Use cast iron to get the best crust and flavor.
5. Don't be afraid to grease your skillet.
6. Temper your butter's smoke point with sunflower oil.
7. Clean your skillet between batches to keep the oil and butter clear. This helps to ensure the best presentation and flavor.
8. Keep your cooked slices warm in a 200°F oven between batches. This is super important.
You can really make French toast out of any type of bread or roll. We never have a short supply of gluten-free bread at our house, because I’m always perfecting my bread recipes. Imagine yourself right now savoring toasted nut and cinnamon croissant French toast with salted caramel syrup! That just might have to happen now…
