My Recipe Puts the 80's "Pop" Back in Pop Tarts 🎹🎵🎶🎙
Updated: Oct 30
Who can resist a pop tart, fresh out of the box with its delectable crust acting as a pillow full of sweet, irresistible filling!? And that crispy icing! Now that there's this recipe, you can skip both the box and the toaster.
Pop tarts are a type of toaster pastry that was introduced in 1964 by Kellogg's. They consist of a sweet filling sealed inside two layers of thin, rectangular pastry crust. Most varieties are also frosted. ¹²
Some of the things you might not know about Pop tarts are:
- The original name for Pop tarts was "Fruit Scones", but it was changed to Pop tarts as a pun on the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. ¹² As a sentimental touch, we filled this recipe video with chewy, sexy-sweet Pop music to celebrate the fun origins of the sweet treat.
- The first Pop tarts came in four flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple currant. The apple currant flavor was soon dropped and later replaced by apple. ¹²
We chose to celebrate pop tarts by recreating the first flavor that came out—strawberry. No one recreates an original the way we do. And our version is GF, so now EVERYONE can have it.
You'll need to use our World's Famous Gluten-Free Pie Crust recipe to get the same results you see in the video. No other GF pie crust rolls out and flakes like our pie crust does. It's made with the rough puff pastry method to give it incredibly light, buttery, and crispy flakiness.
